Mt. Jeez, Ohio

Mt. Jeez overlooks Pleasant Valley and Malabar Farm, home of author Louis Bromfield until his death in 1956. Bromfield was friends with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall; Malabar Farm was the site of their wedding. This is a view from atop Mt. Jeez, named by Bromfield, who would take farmers to the peak so they could see his sustainable farming practices. Malabar Farm and nearby Mohican State Park are located at the edge of the Wisconsinan glacier, the last glacier to enter Ohio.

About ten minutes from my original part of the world. My grandparents and an aunt and uncle still live nearby.

Lucky you! We’re about 40 minutes away, though I confess to getting a little lost around Mohican State Park. Route 3 is one of the most beautiful roads in the state so I wasn’t too disappointed to spend time on it. Did your grandparents know Bromfield?

I loved going to Mohican State Park when I was a kid, and still enjoy (occasionally) visiting it as an adult. We moved to Columbus when I was nine, but I have spent so much of my life in Mansfield/Lexington/Ashland/Bellville. I also loved going to Malabar Farm and taking the house tour. You’d think that once would have been enough for kid and adolescent me, but nope! It’s really beautiful in autumn, too.

No, my grandparents did not know the Bromfield family (as far as I know, anyway). At least not Louis, as he was way born 30+ years before them.
