Super challenge offers feedback and prizes!

I write, And I pitch and I publish (sometimes) and I enter contests (and sometimes do well and other times not so well, like everyone) and at some point my life as a writer and an editor overlaps and I catch myself thinking, well, how would I run this competition? How would I take submissions?

logo_blueIt’s especially frustrating when I pay $50 to enter a competition and I don’t get feedback. Or I pay less and then feedback is extra, or feedback is included but it doesn’t come in time to do me any good.

And it’s frustrating because it’s something I do every week, as part of the yeah write team: I keep the lights on, I give feedback on time, and I help make sure that everyone—not just the winner on the grid—has a place to feel valued and to know that their writing has been read.

That’s why I’m so excited to be part of yeah write’s new super challenge (and, not gonna lie, a little sad that I can’t enter). Partly because it’s something I believe in deeply anyway, but also partly because I’m excited that this format lets us offer prizes in addition to glory and feedback. I know everyone’s just in it for the glory and feedback though.

Who am I kidding? It’s not even about the amount of the prize, although the more folks that enter the more we’re able to offer, nudge nudge. It’s because there’s something really affirming, really validating about the first time you get something tangible back for your writing.

On the other hand, we’re still committed to making sure everyone has the chance to learn something and get read by professional editors, professors, and writers. There are few things more disappointing than getting a piece back with a judge’s note that makes you wonder if the judge even read the thing.

So – shameless plug – you’ve got until 11:59 PM US Eastern time on July 6 to register at a pretty darn affordable $25. The first round will start on the 8th and I hope to see you there. I mean, after our spreadsheet gurus de-anonymize you at the end of the competition!

    Hello, dear friend!
Just so you know, I think of you often and hope you’re doing well. I wish wish I had the time to get re-engaged with the YeahWrite community. I truly want to come back, but only when I have the time to not only start writing fiction again, but have the time to engage with your other talented writers, too. In the meantime, I’ll keep looking forward to your notes and cheer you on from afar. xoxo
